There are many stressors that can arise during the transition to adulthood. Young adults learn to balance and manage their relationships, finances, major life decisions as well as understanding changes within themselves.  As a result, young adults transitioning into adulthood may experience higher levels of stress and need additional resources to support them. If you are in the midst of this transition in your life, read the following for tips to cope.

Transitioning Into Learning to Balance Relationships

Building and maintaining healthy relationships with romantic partners, friends, and family as you transition into adulthood can be difficult as you navigate the complexities of adult relationships. Extraneous factors such as work, self care, finances and other such responsibilities can make it difficult.  As such, young adults need to consider their priorities and ensure that they put effort into those important in their lives, in an effort to gain and give support during this transition to adulthood. Consider the following.

  1. Communicate openly and honestly: Make sure to communicate your thoughts, feelings, and needs to your loved ones. It’s also important to listen actively and try to understand their perspective.
  2. Be supportive: Offer emotional and practical support to your loved ones when they need it. Show them that you care about their well-being and are there for them.
  3. Spend quality time together: Make an effort to spend quality time with your loved ones, whether it’s through activities you both enjoy or simply having meaningful conversations.
  4. Respect each other: Treat your loved ones with respect and kindness, even when you disagree or have conflicts.
  5. Show appreciation: Let your loved ones know that you appreciate them and their contributions to your life.
  6. Resolve conflicts: When conflicts arise, try to resolve them in a healthy and constructive way. This may involve having open and honest communication, compromising, or seeking outside help if necessary.

Transitioning Into Independently Making Major Life Decisions:

Young adults may face the pressure to make important decisions about their career, education, and personal life during their transition to adulthood which can be stressful. Decision-making is a complex process that involves weighing options, considering potential outcomes, and choosing the one that is most likely to lead to a desired result. Here are some steps you can follow to make decisions more effectively:

  1. Identify the problem or opportunity: Clearly define the issue at hand and what needs to be decided.
  2. Gather information: Collect relevant data and consider all relevant factors that may impact the decision.
  3. Consider the options: Generate a list of potential options or solutions to the problem.
  4. Evaluate the options: Weigh the pros and cons of each option and consider their potential outcomes.
  5. Make the decision: Choose the option that seems most likely to lead to the desired result, based on the information and evaluation you have conducted.
  6. Implement the decision: Put the decision into action and monitor the results.

Transitioning Into Understanding And Coping With Changes in Identity

As young adults transition to adulthood, you may experience changes in your sense of identity as you move away from childhood and teenage years. This can be a source of stress as you try to figure out who you are and what you want in life. Identity changes can be difficult to handle, especially if they involve significant changes to your personal identity or the way you present yourself to others. Here are a few things you can do to help cope with an identity change:

  1. Acknowledge and accept your feelings: It’s normal to feel a range of emotions when you experience an identity change. It’s important to take time to process your feelings and allow yourself to feel them fully.
  2. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for support and to talk through your feelings. It can be helpful to have someone to talk to who can listen and offer understanding and guidance.
  3. Take things one step at a time: Changing your identity can be overwhelming, so it’s important to take things one step at a time. Focus on small goals and celebrate your progress along the way.
  4. Practice self-care: Taking care of yourself is crucial during times of change. Make sure to prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep.
  5. Be patient with yourself: It takes time to adjust to a new identity, and it’s okay if it doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient with yourself and give yourself the time and space you need to adjust

How To Transition Into Successfully Managing Finances

Many young adults face the challenge of managing their own finances and supporting themselves financially while transitioning to adulthood. This can be especially difficult for those who have not had the opportunity to build up savings or have limited job prospects. As you navigate these challenges, consider the following.

  1. Make a budget: Start by identifying your income and expenses. This will help you understand where your money is going and where you can cut back.
  2. Set financial goals: Having specific goals in mind can help you stay motivated to stick to your budget.
  3. Track your spending: Keep track of your spending to see where you can cut back. You can use a budgeting app or simply write down your expenses in a notebook.
  4. Cut unnecessary expenses: Look for areas where you can cut back on spending, such as eating out or subscription services you don’t use.
  5. Find ways to save: Look for discounts, coupons, and sales to save money on purchases. Consider switching to a lower-cost service provider, such as a cheaper cell phone plan.
  6. Limit impulse purchases: It’s easy to overspend when you’re not paying attention. Try to avoid impulse purchases by making a list before you go shopping and sticking to it.
  7. Be flexible: Your budget is a plan, not a rule. If something unexpected comes up, don’t be afraid to adjust your budget to accommodate it.

How To Transition Into Finding A Job That You Want

Finding a job that is fulfilling and provides a stable income can be a source of stress for many young adults. Often times,  feelings of inadequacy may arise as a result of possible new challenges and work demands. As you determine how to manage this process, consider the following.

  1. Make sure your resume and cover letter are up to date and tailored to the job you are applying for. Consider including specific examples of your skills and experiences that are relevant to the position.
  2. Network with people in your industry or field of interest. This can include attending job fairs or industry events, joining professional organizations, or connecting with people on LinkedIn.
  3. Search for job openings through job boards, company websites, or by contacting potential employers directly. Be persistent and don’t be afraid to apply for multiple positions.
  4. Practice your interview skills and be prepared to answer common interview questions. Research the company and the job ahead of time and be ready to talk about why you are interested in the position and how you can contribute to the company.
  5. Once you have landed a job, make sure to do your best and be a reliable employee. Show up on time, meet deadlines, and take initiative to learn new skills and take on additional responsibilities.
